Tuesday, October 1, 2013
Evangelical Seminary seeks to engage the interdenominational community of Christian women leaders in thoughtful dialogue about topics pertinent to women leaders. This conversation is for those who have heard the call to lead and those who serve along with them. Our goal for this October 1, 2013 event is to begin the conversation among you, as leaders, and to offer the opportunity for connections and friendships to be made that will extend beyond this event. Join us for our Women in Ministry: Stories of Leadership event in Myerstown. You'll hear life-changing stories from women who are leading and serving in your community and engage in conversations that matter.

Bishop Pauline Peifer will share her heartfelt story of being widowed as a young pastor's wife and the journey to being a Bishop in a big and vibrant conference of the Brethren In Christ Church. Her encouraging words include, "God has a calling, and because of our unpreparedness, He gets the credit."
Pauline C. Peifer is bishop of the Atlantic Conference of the Brethren in Christ Church. As the first woman appointed to this position in her denomination she has oversight for 44 congregations. As the daughter of a pastor, early in life she pursued a career in the health care profession. After tragic circumstances and the loss of her first husband who was also a pastor, she answered the call of God to enter full time ministry. After preparation, she served as an associate pastor and subsequently Executive Pastor at the Grantham Church near Messiah College for 8 ½ years prior to her current appointment.
WOMEN ON THE JOURNEY:
How Our Story Reveals Our Calling
Often we don't see our life experiences as integral to our calling. Yet, when we examine them more closely, we discover the powerful impact they had. Members of this panel will discuss how their stories revealed their calling, and how we can begin to find the same true in our own lives.
Mary Kay Alpaugh, Volunteer Coordinator, Hospice and Community Care
I am currently employed as a volunteer coordinator for Hospice & Community Care. I am a Spiritual Director and serve on the board of Kairos School of Spiritual Formation. I worked in Family Life Ministry at Living Word Community Church for 10 years, and am cofounder of Restoring Eve:a ministry of Spiritual Formation for women.
Melissa Schlies, past youth director at a large church
First sensing a call to youth ministry as a college freshman, Melissa has spent the past fourteen years ministering to teens and training up leaders, in various capacities. For over seven years, she served as the Jr. High Ministry Director at Living Word Community Church, in York, PA. Currently she is a "free agent," mentoring young women of all ages and in her spare time, baking bread.
Dr. Janet Stauffer, Dean of Students, Evangelical Seminary
"As soil becomes the womb that nurtures seed until it presses forth into bloom; so our lives embody call, both in the dormant underground stage where nobody sees, to its full expression in all of its vibrant beauty."
WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP:
Stories of Challenges and Opportunities
While more and more women are entering ministry and leadership roles, their leadership styles are often
different from those of their male counterparts. In this panel discussion, three women leading in three different denominations will discuss their experiences and how the unique challenges can become opportunities for growth and change.
Rev. Helen Adams, Pastor, Stehman's United Methodist Church
Dr. Laurie Mellinger, Dean of Academic Programs, Evangelical Seminary
Christine Sharp, Executive Director, World Missions, Brethren In Christ Church
WOMEN AS ENTREPRENEURS:
Stories of New Ministries
Many women leaders are entrepreneurs whose gifts and strengths do not necessarily fit within traditional roles and opportunities. Instead, they have chosen to pave a new way forward that aligns with their vision and gifting. This panel will share their own stories of discerning and starting new ministries and business organizations, and what they have learned from the process.
Linda Crockett, Executive Director, Samaritan Counseling Center
