"We are formed through relationship. It is a delight to join with students in a mutually formative relational process. Together we explore who we are, how we have been shaped, and our engagement with others – be it members of our families, our clients, colleagues or God. It is in the context of a God of love and truth, a God who addresses and waits for a response in the midst of day-to-day living that I find hope and healing in relationships with others."
Janet is a half time faculty member in the Marriage and Family Therapy department since 2008 and Dean of Students for the past two years. She serves as Faculty Advisor to Student Forum. Janet has also been seeing clients as a marriage and family therapist at her practice in Fredericksburg, PA for over 20 years. Prior to that she was employed at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. In addition to her work at the seminary and her clinical practice, Janet is vice president of the Board of Directors at Philhaven Behavioral Healthcare facility. She has led retreats, presented at professional conferences, and published articles in a number of journals. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and approved supervisor and clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. She also holds membership in the Christian Association for Psychological Studies. Her research interests include genuine meeting through dialogical engagement, loyalty dynamics between and across the generations of the family, and the intersection of faith and therapy.
Janet's husband, Jim, is a family physician specializing in geriatrics. They have found the journey of birthing and raising three sons to have shaped their lives in a myriad of ways! This year they celebrated a son's marriage commitment and received a wonderful daughter-in-law into the family. Janet enjoys canoe trips, hosting guests, and travel with her husband (and family when their schedules can meet!) A favorite vacation spot is Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada where the family packs all of their supplies for a number of days into canoes, and paddle into the wild. The call of the loons on the lake amidst the setting sun and the eerily enticing howl of the wolves during the night is a refreshing counterpoint to the demanding pace of 21st century life.
