"The Lord Jesus, the Bible and my family are the passions of my life. I have been gifted with the opportunity of serving the Lord and His church for some 43 years along with those I love and who have encouraged and prayed for me. Every day offers the promise of a new adventure in journeying with and learning from Him. Jesus continues to be, for me and for His world, "the Way, the Truth and the Life."

Rod and his wife of 46 years, Mary Ellen, have served pastorates in Elizabethtown (Lancaster County), Green Village (NJ), Bethlehem (Northampton County), Ono (Lebanon County), and North Lebanon Township (Lebanon County). They have served extension appointments at Lebanon Valley College (chaplain and adjunct assistant professor of religion), Evangelical Theological Seminary (academic dean, assistant professor of Christian ministry and director of United Methodist Studies) and on the cabinets of Bishops Peter Weaver and Marcus Matthews as Superintendent of the Harkness and NE Districts of the E. PA Conference of The UMC. He has taught courses in Biblical literature and Christian faith at Lebanon Valley College, Evangelical School of Theology and Moravian Theological Seminary.

Rod's academic interests include Biblical studies in both Old and New Testaments and the organizational and spiritual life of the church. Currently he is reading through the life and ministry of Paul and is reviewing Old Testament history. He has written several entries for the Anchor Bible Dictionary. He has served as an associate editor for and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Religious and Theological Abstracts. Rod is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature. Currently he, along with the faculty, is developing the seminary's field education program which he administers and is reading widely in this area. He is a member of the Association for Theological Field Education and the Evangelical Association of Theological Field Educators Caucus.

Rod is a pianist. He has trained in classical music and as has played with rock, Dixieland, big band and praise band groups. He serves as pianist and accompanist in local churches and camp meetings.

Rod was born in Reading (Berks Co.), PA, and lived in Wernersville with his parents and brother through his high school years at Conrad Weiser. He met his wife of 45 years, Mary Ellen (Olmsted), at Lebanon Valley College. They have four daughters (Laurabeth Shearer, Angela Gail Dickinson, Sara Helene Jackson, Janell Davis (deceased]) and six grandchildren.
