Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an empirically validated, structured approach to couples therapy. Dr. Sue Johnson and her colleagues have developed EFT and researched the effectiveness of the model over the past 15 years. EFT is now one of the best-delineated and empirically validated approaches in the field of couple therapy. The research has shown a 70 to 75 percent recovery rate from marital distress; and 90 percent of couples report significant improvement in the relationship.

EFT is based in attachment theory and is designed for treating couples and families. It is extremely successful because healing occurs within relationships. We all strive to feel loved, valued and appreciated in the relationships that matter most. EFT helps people see how they get stuck in negative patterns of interaction, often resulting in distress. Once people begin to understand these negative patterns of interaction, they can create new ways of relating to each other that brings about closeness¸ connection and renewed intimacy.

An EFT therapist creates a safe environment where the couple and/or family can process and reprocess painful emotional experiences and find ways to heal and reconnect with each other. EFT is an experiential, systemic approach that works in the here and now. It focuses on emotional intimacy, connection and bonding within significant relationships.
